Colonoscopy is a test or an examination of the large intestine, also called the colon and the terminal portion of the small intestine. This procedure is performed under anesthesia by using a flexible specially designed tube called a colonoscope which is inserted through the anus and gradually advanced further till the proximal end of the colon. During the colonoscopy, pictures are taken of the inside surface of the colon. A detailed report is given to the patient. It is an outpatient procedure. Colonoscopy is used to make a diagnosis of a disease of the colon and also as a screening procedure for the prevention of colon and rectal cancer.
